Overdentures

3D rendering of overdentures in a mouthAre you looking for options on how to address certain issues with your dental health such as decaying or missing teeth and other similar concerns? Overdentures might be exactly what you have been searching for. Overdentures are one of the most practical and commonly used restorative techniques available in modern prosthodontics.

With today’s more advanced options you can have the beautiful appearance and hardworking function of natural teeth in no time. Our experienced prosthodontist here at Dental Prosthodontics of Rochester are highly skilled in this practice and would be glad to assist in any way possible, from a simple consultation all the way up to performing the procedure.

What Are Overdentures?

Overdentures are much like traditional dentures in the sense of look and design. However, they are designed to be placed over existing teeth or implants. This distinction alone means that they are significantly more stable and secure than conventional denture appliances. While these dental devices can be placed over existing teeth, for the best results it is often recommended to opt for the implants to be used for anchoring the overdenture in place.

One of the reasons is because many times when a person has already lost enough teeth to warrant getting a full denture plate, their remaining teeth are rarely in condition to offer the support necessary to provide sturdy reinforcement. By utilizing implants, the overdenture can then be clipped or fastened to the supporting teeth for maximum stability, all while still being able to be removed daily for cleaning.

What Are the Differences Between Overdentures and Traditional Dentures?

In addition to the aforementioned anchoring system, overdentures also offer a number of other differences to conventional dentures, including the fact that they are longer lasting, increase bite strength, do not shift or move when speaking or eating, as well as several other highly advantageous examples. They also help you to avoid developing the sunken cheek look that comes with having your teeth removed to make way for regular dentures.

When Are They the Most Suitable Option?

Overdentures are a great choice for people who are in need of significant cosmetic or restorative dental work on one or both jaws. They are especially popular among people who want more support and a more natural look and feel than traditional dentures. In deciding whether or not this would be the right choice for you or if another denture system, as well any other appliance might be helpful, we suggest speaking with one of our oral health specialists about it further.

Expectations For and Function of Your New Overdenture

Once the entire process has been completed and the healing and fusing has taken place between the implant and the jawbone, the patient can fully anticipate many new and exciting changes. In addition to the incredible new smile and improved sense of self-worth that goes along with it, you may also find yourself enjoying foods that you have not been able to eat in quite awhile.

Overdentures may be able to solve many or even all of the issues you are experiencing with your mouth. To find out more, give Dental Prosthodontics of Rochester a call. We can be reached at (585) 673-7702.
